DEATH,
THOU HAST DIED.
Death, you thought you’d always come down and
steal us before we even know how to spell our names? You thought you would
always come down and snatch that little child from her mother’s nursing
breasts? You thought you would come and take away the smiles from the faces and
replace it with sobs and pain? Death, thou hast died. The weapon you called
cancer can now be controlled when detected early, HIV/AIDS no longer spells doom
on its victim and child mortality rate is almost beyond zero. Death, give me
your ear. We now know how to practice hygiene and keep Malaria at bay. We know
how to eat healthy and exercise all the way to good health. Let us now see
where you are going to ensnare us. You shall run all over the world looking for
victims to devour but will run back home ashamed and heartbroken. You may
instigate wars and have our soldiers and innocent children killed, but we shall
always remain unbowed. You may cause accidents on our roads and air spaces but
we shall always remain unnerved. Death, we shall no longer bury stillborn
babies and those who died before their time. We shall not allow you to take our
children before they realize their dreams for as long as we are concerned, thou
hast died. We shall no longer be hearing wails deep in the night and cries late
in the day. We shall no longer be seeing distraught women with disheveled hair
running all over crying for their young husbands. Our old men shall no longer
be asking God why he never took them instead. Death, though hast died. Thou
shall never win us over. Thou shall not make us cry every morning and evening.
You won’t make us live in fear any longer for as long as we are concerned,
though hast died. We refuse to cry because of you. We shall no longer weep nor
shall we bow to your destruction for as long as we are concerned, thou hast
died.
